The Virtue Learning Center Humanities Course
English, History, & Cultural Fluency is the most popular course at The Virtue Learning Center. As the college or high school process approaches, part of the English program is helping students write college applications that fit the mold of top Universities in the United States or elsewhere. The course goal is admission to a top US high school or college and full fluency and competency in any English speaking realm.
There are three components…
English
We start by building English skills from the foundation with intense and conceptual vocabulary learning, reading comprehension, writing, and speech. After solidifying the base of our students' English knowledge, we move to Analysis, the most important part of our program. Knowing English isn't just about expressing thoughts, it is about using it as a tool. During the Analysis portion, we teach how to precisely use English to investigate texts at a high level and give clear, effective, persuasive presentations. Over time, students will acquire an extensive familiarity with the canon of classic literature and an ability analyze dense prose and poetry.
History
The Virtue Learning Center Humanities Course uses history as a way to improve our students' English and analytic capabilities. Our history studies are not about memorizing dates or facts. We teach our students to critically read and analyze primary documents and compare them with historiographic narratives. We use the raw material of historical events and documents as a the raw materials with which we improve students' English and analytical capability.
Cultural Fluency
Succeeding in the United States' education system isn't just about what you know or how good your language skills are. It is about how you think. The culture of these top institutions is an ability to think critically for yourself within certain frameworks. The advantage of The Virtue Learning Center is that we are located in New York and know exactly what these frameworks are. We'll teach students how to think the way that these universities are looking for. In the process, we set up our students for a vibrant life of critical and productive intellectual inquiry.
Standardized tests are like games. There are rules, time constraints, and competitive scores. And just like all games, there are techniques that help all good standardized test takers exceed. Whether it is an AP exam, the SAT, ACT, SSAT, or TOEFL, our instructors know the right approach to take and how to bring students' baseline scores to the next level.
